Research

I spent 30 months (’01-‘03) at the University College London undertaking research on CT Colonography, the newest imaging modality for the investigation of Colorectal Disease. My research project was to compare this test with Colonoscopy and to refine the technique to improve the detection of colorectal polyps and cancer.

 

My research work has shown that Multislice CT Colonography (MCTC) is comparable with conventional colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal cancers and polyps larger than 5mm in size. I have shown that the use of intravenous contrast material in patients with symptoms of colorectal neoplasia helped to improve diagnostic accuracy in the detection of both polyps and cancers. My work has also shown that two dimensional axial images as primary evaluation mode with additional three dimensional rendering for addressing areas of concern as the most effective and time efficient. I also found that the 3mm dataset for MCTC is comparable to 1mm datasets for the detection of colorectal neoplasia larger than 5mm in size.

Faculty Member – Basic Surgical Skills Course, Plymouth

 

As a SHO, I regularly taught clinical skills, patient communication skills and principles of surgery to medical students from the Cambridge University Medical School who were attached to my firm. As Senior Registrar in the South West of England teaching hospitals, I taught history taking and patient examination techniques to medical students from the Peninsula Medical School & Bristol Medical School attached to the Dept. of Surgery on our wards and outpatient clinic.

 

Computer Skills

I am very proficient in Microsoft and AppleMac Applications: Word, Access, Excel and Power Point and have used these applications extensively to support data collection and analysis in my research.

 I am proficient in developing medical websites for medical knowledge dissemination.
